The Baton Rouge real estate market is a good one. Immediately after Hurricane Katrina, the city was flooded with about 100,000 more people. Many of them decided to quickly buy Baton Rouge homes in area anticipating either a temporary or perhaps even permanent move to the Louisiana capital city. Home values shot up dramatically as sellers were in the driver's seat and began demanding larger amounts for their homes. Some sellers even tried to "cash in" on a frenzy buy putting their home on the market just to test the waters. This frenzy has subsided for the most part but the building and buying and selling of homes and properties is still going strong with prices noticeably higher than what they were before the hurricane. The surrounding parishes of East Baton Rouge are Ascension Parish and Livingston Parish. These parishes have been growing a huge rates even way before Katrina. Good school systems have been a big reason that families have been choosing to move to these surrounding areas. Unfortunately, the East Baton Rouge Parish school system had long been under a long running desegregation case in the courts. This spurred the growth of many private schools in Baton Rouge. For those that decided private school tuition was too costly, the nearby parishes offered what many of them were looking for in a school system.
East Baton Rouge Parish schools have seen a building boom due to a tax that voters approved to fund new construction and repair work.
